|ECHINACEA EXTRACT||250.00 mg|
Echinacea extracts have both antiviral and immune simulatory properties (Hosp Pharm 1998, 33:180). Several consituents (including alkylamides and echinocides) of Echinacea seem to be involved in stimulating non-specific immune response. Echinacea increases phagocytosis and lymphocytic action by promoting release of certain cytokines (above ref.) The activity of the extract declines after 8 weeks (Am J Heatlh Syst. Pharm 1999, 56:121). It should therefore not be used continuously.
May assist in supporting the immune system.
Echinacea is contraindicated in breast feeding mothers and patients with progressive systemic and autoimmune disorders such as tuberculosis, leukemia multiple sclerosis, lupus etc.. Persons who are allergic to flowers of the daisy family may develop allergic reactions such as skin rash and breathing problems.
Do not use continuously.
Echinacea can overstimulate the immune system and may worsen symptoms of lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune disorders. It may also be counterproductive in progressive infections such as tuberculosis. Always consult your health professional if you are seriously ill.
Echinacea should be used cautiously with drugs that inhibit the cytochrome P450 system such as lovastatin (Phytomedicine 2000, 7: 273). Echinacea may interfere with immunosuppressant drugs such as azathioprine and other similar durgs (Hosp Pharm 1998, 33:180).
