PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Chrysin is a natural bioflavonoid that has shown remarkable activity in suppressing the enzyme aromatase, which is responsible inter alia for the conversion of testosterone into estrogen (several studies). In elderly men, testosterone levels decline progressively with age while estrogen levels rise to unphysiological levels. This happens because, with advancing age, the aromatase activity increases. Low testosterone levels (with high estrogen levels) are a recognised risk factor for several diseases associated with elderly men including risk for heart disease. For this reason, controlling aromatase levels is highly desirable in elderly men. Several studies (see for example Steroid Biochemical Molecular Biology-1993) have shown chrysin to be a highly effective natural controller of aromatase activity in elderly men. Its activity is comparable to that of synthetic aromatase inhibiting drugs.
Tribulus terrestris increases testosterone levels, probably by increasing free testosterone levels through displacement of bound testosterone to sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). Another study showed that it increases secretion of luteinising hormone which stimulates testosterone.
Bioperine, an extract of pepper, is included in the formula because several studies have shown that it increases the absorption of chrysin substantially.
INDICATIONS
To correct increased conversion of testosterone into estrogen in elderly men.
CONTRA INDICATIONS
None.
WARNINGS
Although chrysin is remarkably non-toxic, it is highly advisable to do blood level assays of testosterone and estrogen to ensure correct dosage levels of the product. For this medical advice should be sought.
INTERACTIONS
Theoretically, chrysin may have an additive effect on other aromatase inhibitors such as Arimidex.
