PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
The product is formulated to assist in controlling both glucose and insulin levels as well as to counteract complications that may arise from the diabetic and pre-diabetic state in both type 2 and type1 diabetics. Cinnamon Cassia bark mimics insulin thus stimulating glucose metabolism (Diabetes Care 2003,26:3215). It also has a direct affect on the release of insulin by the pancreas (J Endocrinol 1999, 163:207). Alpha lipoic acid promotes oxidation of carbohydrates thus improving insulin resisitance (Free Rad Biol Med 1995, 19:227). High doses of biotin stabilise blood sugar levels (Ann NY Acad Sc 1985, 447:389). Chromium is necessary for the cellular uptake of insulin. It is especially important in the type 2 patient allowing reduction of insulin levels. Persons with diabetes have decreased chromium levels (Metabolism 1997, 46:469). The glucose lowering effects of bilberry extracts have been described (Throm Res1996, 84:311). The extract contains different compounds amongst which the anthocyanidins may be responsible for some of the different biological effects of the extract, including its effects on glucose metabolism. Bilberry improves microcirculation especially in the eyes thus preventing diabetic retinopathy. Vanadium mimics the action of insulin possibly by causing phophorylation of insulin receptor proteins. It augments the action of insulin in type 2 diabetes (J Biol chem 1999, 274:2617). Gymnemic acids reduce intetinal absorption of glucose and may stimulate pancreatic beta cell growth (Townsend Letter for Doctors and patients 1998, 18:72). Niacinamide reduces insulin requirements and protects the pancreas (Diabetologica 1995, 38: 8480). A deficiency of manganese compromises the diabetic’s ability to handle sugars.
INDICATIONS
May assist in maintaining normal blood sugar levels.
CONTRA INDICATIONS
None.
WARNINGS
None.
INTERACTIONS
Concomitant use of alpha-lipoic acid and cinnamon bark extracts with antidiabetic compounds might cause additive hypoglycaemic effects (Diabetes Care 1999, 22:280). Gymnema enhances the hypoglycaemic effects of hypoclycaemic drugs (J Ethopharmacol 1990, 30:295).
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Do not use during pregnancy or lactation.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS OF USE
Take six capsules daily in divided doses with meals.
SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
None.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT
None described.
