PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
The main poly unsaturated fatty acid components in the product are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) with an extremely low toxic mineral content (e.g. mercury < 0.1 mg/kg). The level of DHA is relatively higher than in normal fish oils (EPA 160 mg/g; DHA 110 mg/g). Both acids are important in inflammatory conditions since they suppress release of pro-inflammatory arachidonic acid from cell membranes, thus inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandin E2. DHA and EPA are beneficial for the prevention of heart disease and high blood pressure (Lipids 1999, 34 : Suppl S 313). Numerous studies have been devoted to the benefits of these two fatty acids which occur mainly in fish oils. Amongst other benefits , they have been shown to reduce cholesterol levels, to lower blood pressure, to reduce abnormal platelet aggregration and thus to reduce blood clot formation, to retard dementia and to slow ageing. This, together with the fact that they have been shown to be natural defribrillators (reducing the tendency to arrythmias), have been linked to the benefit of fish oil supplementation in reducing sudden death. These benefits may be seen in the disease pattern of the population of Greenland where the consumption of fish and fish oil is very high.
Yet another benefit of these O-3 fatty acids is that they improve arterial elasticity (Am J Clin Nutr, Aug 2002). An article in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), reported that there was 40 -50% reduction in strokes among middle aged women who did not use aspirin but who ate fish 4-5 times a week (Hiroyashu et al, JAMA, 2001). Fish oil also reduces the blood level of Creactive protein, now considered an important risk factor for heart disease.
