PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant in the aqueous phase of the body. In this process it is converted into the inactive and pro-oxidant form which no longer has antioxidant properties. In this product, vitamin C is therefore combined with bioflavonoids which serve to regenerate the active form. The water soluble form of vitamin C is further combined with the fat soluble form L-ascorbyl palmitate. In this manner, vitamin C activity in both the lipid and aqueous phases of the body is ensured. The buffered form prevents over acidification of the urine thus also minimizing the risk of kidney stones. The product contains only natural ingredients, and is safe for diabetics since it contains no sugar.
INDICATIONS
Because of its powerful antioxidant and anti-free radical action, vitamin C is beneficial in a wide variety of diseases including coronary heart disease, diabetes, cancer, asthma and allergies as well as against infections including colds and flu when used correctly. This has been verified in various clinical studies.
CONTRA INDICATIONS
None.
WARNINGS
Patients with a history of kidney disease must use the product with care and preferably under medical supervision. Patients with intestinal ulceration must consult their health professional before using the product.
INTERACTIONS
Vitamin C may increase chromium absorption (Trace elements Electrolytes 1994, 11:178) High levels of vitamin C may decrease absorption of chromium (Am J Clin Nutr, 1983, 37:553). Supplemental vitamin C improves absorption of non-haem iron (Public Health Nutr. 2000, 3:105). Vitamin C supplements may destroy dietary vitamin B12 if taken together with food (JAMA 1974, 230:241). When taken concurrently with oral contraceptives, vitamin C may increase estrogen levels by up to 55% (Br. Med. J. Clin Res. Ed, 1981, 282:1516). High doses of vitamin C may reduce the response to warfarin by reducing warfarin absorption (Toxicol. Appl. Pharmacol. 1975, 31:544).
PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
Do not exceed normal dosage levels during pregnancy or lactation.
DOSAGE AND DIRECTIONS OF USE
Add half a glass of water to half a teaspoon (300mg vitamin C). Stir vigorously until dispersed and ingest immediately, including undissolved material (water-insoluble ascorbyl palmitate). During infections (e.g. colds and flu) up to 4 heaped teaspoons (24 g, 8000mg vitamin C) can be used daily for a few days subject to the bowel tolerance limit.
The product should preferably not be taken with meals.
SIDE EFFECTS AND SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Side effects.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE AND PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT
Very high doses (e.g. 15g vitamin C per day) may cause diarrhoea in some patients (the bowel tolerance limit). This is harmless and disappears when the dose is lowered. The bowel tolerance limit varies widely in different patients and in some it may be as low as 5 g.
